Monday’s Links

Obviously the big story of the morning is that the grand experiment in Munch has failed. Jurgen Klinsmann the most American flavored manager to ever be hired by a major European club has been sacked as the proud club slips further and further behind in an attempt to defend its title. Former US National Team midfielder Martin Vasquez who Klinsmann had taken from LA with him to Munich was also sacked.

Today in US National Team History

The US continued its strong early play in 2001 with a 1-0 win at Arrowhead Stadium over Costa Rica. This win would help give the US enough points early to survive a late collapse in the Hexagonal which saw the US gain only one point from the last four matches and finish third in the Hex.

Here was the US lineup for this game:

Kasey Keller

David Regis

Jeff Agoos

Carlos Llamosa

Steve Cherundolo

Chris Armas

Claudio Reyna        (Greg Berhlater)

Tony Sanneh

Clint Mathis            (Eddie Lewis)

Josh Wolff               (Ante Razov)

Josh Wolff’s goal gave the US the win, but the star of the match was Clint Mathis whose 2000 to 2002 form is perhaps the best in the history of the national team.

Tony Sanneh played in an advanced role because of injuries to Earnie Stewart, Cobi Jones,  Frankie HejdukJoe Max Moore and Brian McBride, but come World Cup 2002 Sanneh would play as a right back.

Josh Wolff and Ante Razov were team mates in Chicago but were competitors for the same spot on the national team. Razov was better in 2000 but by 2002 Bruce Arena had decided to take Wolff to Korea and leave Razov behind.

Today in US National Team History

April 24th 1994 was the date of an embarrassing 2-1 loss for the United States in San Diego against Iceland. The lone US goal was scored by Frankie Klopas.

The loss proved to be a defining moment for a host of players looking to make the final cut for Bora Milutinovic’s 1994 World Cup squad.

Here was the US Lineup:

Brad Friedel

Marcello Balboa (Dom Kinnear)

Alexi Lalas

Jeff Agoos (Paul Caligiuri)

Fernando Clavijo

Tom Dooley

Brian Quinn

Claudio Reyna

Cobi Jones

Hugo Perez

Frank Klopas

The loss spelled the beginning of the end for Quinn, Kinnear, and Agoos all of whom were cut in the next month when John Harkes, Tab Ramos and the other European based players returned to the national team.
