Turkcell Super League – week 11 – Saturday action
Saturday action in the Turkcell Super League featured two matches. One saw Bursaspor, who are the surprising second place team after last week’s action, going on the road in a tricky road tie against Antalyaspor. The other saw Beşiktaş, on a three game league winning streak, facing Ankaragücü at the Inonu Stadium.
The sunny vacation city of Antalya was the setting for Bursaspor to try to consolidate their second place position in the league. It wouldn’t come easy however, as Serge Djiehoua scored off a header in the 24th minute to put Antalyaspor ahead 1-0. Tita set up the goal with a corner kick, and Djiehoua put his header behind Bursaspor goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov. Bursaspor couldn’t get barely any chances in the first half, and when they did, many of them were wasted. Bursaspor come out furiously in the second half. Antalyaspor goalkeeper Omer Catkic was up to the task trying to preserve a lead and give Antalyaspor a crucial three points. In the 70th minute, Bursaspor got the goal they were looking for. Ivan Ergic scored off a corner kick by Ali Tandoğan to make the score 1-1. That would be all the scoring as the game ended in a draw. Bursaspor head coach Ertuğrul Sağlam said after the match that in the second half, he saw a Bursaspor that dictated the game and wanted to score, giving him hope for the win. He went on to say that he regretted that his team lost two points on the road.
Beşiktaş was back at the Inonu stadium on a three game league winning streak, slowly climbing back to the top of the table after a slow start to the season. Under a rainy night in Istanbul, Beşiktaş looked to extend their winning streak. It looked good in the 16th minute, as Ismail Koybasi took a shot from outside the penalty area. His shot defelected off an Ankaragücü player, and went into the goal for a 1-0 lead to Beşiktaş. Beşiktaş seemed to dominate play during the first half, but chances from Nihat Kahveci and Mert Nobre could not find the target. In the second half, the roles seemed to reverse, as Ankaragücü seemed to attack more. Beşiktaş looked to use the long ball to search for goals at the other end. Chances for Beşiktaş either ended up in the hands of Ankaragücü goalkeeper Serkan Kirintili or ended up not being on target. Beşiktaş would hold on for the win and extend their league match winning streak to four. It seems that Beşiktaş is now finding its rhythm, and it may be crucial going into their home UEFA Champions League fixture against VfL Wolfsburg.
