Turkcell Super League – week 16 – Sunday action.

With Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe getting back on the winning track on Friday and Saturday respectively, it was up to the leaders going into Sunday’s matches in the Turkcell Super League to keep up.  Bursaspor would have taken on Ankaraspor this week, but with Ankaraspor’s disqualification, Bursaspor got three free goals and the three free points in the standings.  Kayserispor would have to win to keep their lead in the standings; Beşiktaş would have to win to keep up in the standings.  Also, with the fourth Senol Gunes era getting off to a good start last week, Trabzonspor looks to get within striking distance of the top five in the standings.

Kayserispor’s improbable place at the top of the standings last week shocked many.  Perhaps it could have been a fluke; perhaps they are actually a contender for the league title.  Their match against Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediyespor was a beginning, whether Kayserispor is a contender, or just simply a placeholder for one of the big three Istanbul clubs to eventually retake the top of the standings.  It didn’t look good for Kayserispor early on, as in the 2nd minute, Gokhan Suzen’s free kick found the head of Marcos Barbosa to give Istanbul’s municipal club the quick 1-0 lead.  But Kayserispor didn’t take long to respond.  In the 13th minute, Mehmet Eren made a cross from the left, and Ariza Makukula shot a beautiful volley to tie the game at 1-1.  Makukula may be on loan from Benfica, but he seems to be the find of the season, and Kayserispor should find any way possible to keep the Portuguese striker.  Kayserispor almost took the lead in the 21st minute, but Franco Cangele’s shot went wide.  The first half ended the score tied 1-1.  Kayserispor took control in the second half.  Attempts from Furkan Ozcal and Makukula in the 54th and 55th minutes respectively were unsuccessful.  The go ahead goal Kayserispor was looking for come in the 67th minute.  Mehmet Eren left the ball for Cangele, who ran into the penalty area and shot the ball into the net from a very tight angle.  Both teams had a few more chances, but Kayserispor went on to win 2-1.  Kayserispor leads the league again for a second straight week.

The Senol Gunes era has been off to a good start for Trabzonspor.  After winning two straight league matches, Trabzonspor looked to make it three straight taking on second from bottom Denizlispor.  In the 8th minute, Alanzinho had an attempt on goal saved by the Denizlispor keeper.  Trabzonspor got the goal they wanted in the 24th minute.  Alanzinho got the ball from near the center circle in the Denizlispor half, dribbled the ball towards goal, and shot the ball from the edge of the penalty area.  The ball was saved, came off the post, and Drago Gabric cleaned up the mess and gave Trabzonspor the lead 1-0.  The second half saw Denizlispor come out somewhat more forcefully, but Trabzonspor kept control of the game.  In the 57th minute, Trabzonspor put together a series of short passes, but the end result was Serkan Balci shooting the ball wide.  In the 70th minute, Alanzinho dribbled the ball from the center line, and passed to Gustavo Colman, receiving the ball a few yards from the penalty area.  Colman’s pass in the air was volleyed low by Umut Bulut, but the shot barely went out on the right side of goal.  Trabzonspor went on to win the match 1-0.  Denizlispor’s only win this season is because of the free three points given because of Ankaraspor’s disqualification.

Beşiktaş looked to keep pace with the leaders as they took on Manisaspor.  With the disappointment of European competition behind them, Beşiktaş could afford to concentrate solely on the league.  Although drawing last week against Diyarbakirspor, Beşiktaş still had a nine match unbeaten streak in the league.  In the 10th minute, Rodrigo Tello’s corner was headed by Ibrahim Toraman off the post.  In the 24th minute, Nihat Kahveci’s pass in the air was trapped by Bobo, and Bobo immediately shot the ball low into the goal to give Beşiktaş the lead.  Promise Issac had a chance for Manisaspor in the 32nd minute, but Rustu Recber saved the shot, and the ball went out for a corner.  The resulting corner resulted in Oumar Kalabane heading the ball into the goal to tie the match at 1-1.  The second saw Beşiktaş have several opportunities on goal.  However, their suspect finishing, which has been their Achilles heel the last few weeks, cost them again.  It seems as though the midfield seems suspect, or head coach Mustafa Denizli has gotten his lineups wrong.  Whatever the reason, Beşiktaş has had two consecutive draws, and now improves it unbeaten streak to ten.  They are still within striking distance of the leaders.

Other results from the Turkcell Super League on Sunday include Sivasspor 2-1 Eskişehirspor, Gençlerbirliği 1-1 Gaziantepspor, and Diyarbakirspor 2-2 Kasımpaşa.

The top five of the Turkcell Super League is as follows.  Kayserispor and Fenerbahçe both have 34 points each, but Kayserispor is in first with a +16 goal differential, compared with second place Fenerbahçe and their +13 goal differential.  Galatasaray is in third place with 33 points.  Bursaspor and Beşiktaş have 32 points, with Bursaspor in fourth place due to their +16 goal differential, compared with fifth place Beşiktaş, who has a +11 goal differential.
