Andy Gray and Richard Keyes Headed to FOX
Fox Soccer Channel continues an impressive upgrade of its programming and commentator quality. Despite losing Max Bretos to ESPNEWS earlier this month, the network has begun the process of launching an HD Channel, and also announced this week a new channel, Fox Soccer Plus, which will compliment FSC’s current programming in an HD format with additional Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and Serie A matches.
Now, FSC is adding Richard Keys and Andy Gray from Sky Sports to their nightly World Cup wrap up show, this summer. Gray is familiar to American audiences thanks to his work during the 2008 European Championships for ESPN and ABC. Keyes is a presenter for Sky Sports and is well known among Premier League fans.
I am pleased FSC is upgrading their product with two high profile names. I do have my concerns about Gray, however. In 2008, Gary showed a less than passing knowledge of Serie A and the Bundesliga, two leagues that produced a good number of the stars of that competition.
But this time around, Gray will not be a co-commentator or in the studio during games, but analyzing matches afterwards. From that vantage point, he is a huge upgrade.
